We should point out this plant has nothing to do with potatoes!
The name Potatorum is derived from the Latin “of the drinkers” (hence the common name Drunkard Agave), a reference to the use of inner parts of the rosette of the plant in making pulque, a Mexican alcoholic beverage.
The production process is described as long and delicate and given the sap, like all Agave’s, can cause gastrointestinal distress if ingested we do notrecommend you attempt to make your own alcoholic beverages using this plant!
This actually does make Potatorum somewhat of a conversation piece when visitors come around, though!
Potatorum is a compact, symmetrical Agave that exhibits a significant level of polymorphism or variableness (It has two or more clearly different morphs or forms).
In the case of the 'Cameron Blue' variety, it is not actually referring to someone called Cameron but to the location these plants are found, being Cameron County in Texas on the Mexican border in the lower Rio Grande Valley.
A cute and tough little Agave that has a definite place in succulent and cacti gardens, xeriscapes and such.
